Referrals to specialists are required if you wish to claim the Medicare rebate for your consultation. Please check that your referral is up-to-date before your visit to a specialist.
An appointment is needed for all new referrals.
A repeat referral may be provided
- at a face-to-face appointment
- by Telehealth if you have had a face-to-face consult at the practice within 12 months
- without a consultation for a private fee if you have seen the referring doctor within the past 3 months and that there have not been any changes in your information (personal details, symptoms, medication) since your last visit to the specialist.
Referrals cannot be backdated. Backdating referrals is unlawful and would breach the Commonwealth Health Insurance Act.
If a referral is requested on the day of your specialist appointment a fit-in appointment with your usual doctor or another doctor may be offered where possible.
