Antenatal care (ANC) refers to the regular medical and health checkups, screenings, and support provided to a pregnant woman to ensure both her well-being and the healthy development of her baby.
Key Components of Antenatal Care:
- Regular Checkups: Periodic visits to a healthcare provider to monitor the mother’s health and the baby’s growth.
- Ultrasound Scans: Imaging to assess fetal development, detect abnormalities, and determine the baby’s position and gestational age.
- Nutritional Guidance: Advice on a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients, such as folic acid, iron, and calcium, to promote maternal and fetal health.
- Screenings and Tests:
- Blood pressure monitoring.
- Screening for gestational diabetes, anemia, and infections like HIV or syphilis.
- Blood type and Rh factor tests.
- Immunizations: Vaccines like the tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis (Tdap) vaccine to protect the mother and baby.
- Education: Guidance on labor, delivery, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
- Emotional Support: Addressing mental health concerns, such as anxiety or depression, and offering counseling when needed.
Antenatal Shared Care:
If you are pregnant and do not have any medical conditions that require specialist Obstetric care you are suitable for shared pregnancy care. Shared pregnancy care is a wonderful way to build a relationship and trust with a health care professional that can continue to provide support and care after your pregnancy. Your pregnancy care is shared between an accredited family doctor (GP) or Privately Practising midwife and Westmead Hospital.
Dr Melanie Brown and Dr Lil Gorringe both offer antenatal shared care.
