Referrals

Referrals to specialists are required if you wish to claim the Medicare rebate for your consultation. Please check that your referral is up-to-date before your visit to a specialist.

An appointment is needed for all new referrals.

When appropriate, referrals for review of the same condition may be provided without a consultation if you have seen the referring doctor within the past 3 months and that there has not been any changes in your information (personal details, symptoms, medication) since your last visit to the specialist. A fee applies.

Referrals cannot be backdated. A referral on the day of your appointment can be provided without a consultation if appropriate (a fee applies) or at a fit-in appointment.
